Jamie's getting that hopeless vibe, too, but he can't let himself give in to it, not when there's a chance of escaping. He bolts off after Itachi, managing to keep pace with him surprisingly well for a short, wimpy-looking kid. Turns out that unrelenting terror is a pretty good motivator.
